Keeping a routine attached to the right bot

A contribution to Hermes Bot Mode that keeps an open routine dialog tied to its original owner when the selected profile changes.

By Dominic Grieco. Updated 2026-09-11.

A small interface bug can matter a lot when the interface controls agents. In this case, the question was simple: if I open a routine for one bot and then select a different bot, which one should the open dialog still belong to?

The answer should stay the same throughout the interaction. Selecting another profile shouldn't quietly change the target of work that already started.

The bug

Hermes Bot Mode's routine dialogs and the refresh after a change could still follow the currently selected pane. A profile switch while a dialog was open, or while a request was underway, could therefore target or refresh the newly selected bot instead of the original one.[5]

These are the kinds of bugs that can disappear in a normal click through. Open a dialog, make a change and wait for it to finish, and everything may look fine. Switch profiles in the middle of that sequence and the assumption about who owns the work becomes visible.

The change

My contribution preserves the routine's original owner across the dialog and the request. The refresh stays attached to that owner too, instead of following whatever profile happens to be selected when the response arrives.[5]

The pull request is merged in Hermes Bot Mode. It's one contribution to a project I use, and a useful example of the detail I care about when working on agent tools: the interface should make it easy to tell which agent a piece of work belongs to, even while other things are happening.
